The Very Reverend Gilleasbuig Iain Macmillan has been the Minister of St Giles' since 1973. He is the Dean of the Thistle and Chaplain-in-Ordinary to Her Majesty.

St. Giles' Cathedral is the High Kirk of Edinburgh, and has been at the heart of the city's spiritual life for at least 900 years. Much of our Presbyterian history originated in and around St. Giles'. Two examples: In 1559 John Knox led the Lords of the Congregation into Edinburgh where he was installed as minister of St. Giles'. After the abdication of Mary, Queen of Scots, her half-brother, James Stewart, was appointed to head the government of Scotland. After Stewart's assassination in 1570, he was buried at St. Giles' where his friend John Knox preached at the funeral.
