Centennial
Grape Project
The
Centennial Grape Project grew out of one of these oral history interviews. Dorothy
Wenger, a 93-year old interviewee, shared her memory of the Concord grape vineyard
that was discovered on the Pennsylvania Avenue property when it was purchased
in 1954. more>>
Walteria
Community Hot Meal
In
2002 St. Mark’s discovered that the Walteria Community Hot Meal at Walteria
United Methodist Church in Torrance was in much need of help to feed the homeless
and poor on the second Saturday of every month. St. Mark’s totally embraced
this need and became a vibrant part of the ministry, providing food, volunteers
(which often included youth), and financial assistance. To this day St. Mark’s
monthly presence is there without fail.
Pocket
Change For Mission
is an ongoing
project. There is a large water bottle in the church narthex where folks drop
spare change each week. The Outreach committee chooses a recipient for each quarter
of the year. The chosen project is lifted up in church announcements and often
includes a program with guest speaker and lunch following worship on one of the
Sundays during the quarter. Some of the recipients have been Darfurian refugee
program, Teen Challenge, Smile Train, Door of Faith Orphanage, Habitat for Humanity,
and Meals on Wheels.
Presbyterian
Women
St. Mark's has a very active Presbyterian Women's Organization. We have two Presbyterian Women's Circles (Elizabeth and Esther Circles), one meeting in the daytime and the other meeting in the evening. These women share God's love with each other and with the community through Bible study, fellowship events, and mission fundraisers. The Elizabeth Circle meets the second Tuesday of every month at 7:30 PM in the home of one of our members. The Esther Circle meets the second Tuesday of every month at 1:30 PM at the church. In addition there is a monthly general luncheon meeting of both groups held at 11:00 AM on the third Thursday of every month at the church.
